 Welcome!
"Welcome to my home. My wife, Virginia, and I bought this house in 1909, seven years after we first came to Taos. Even though we had a winter studio in New York City, this house was our real home.
"In my studio, I painted Pueblo Indians. My desire was to express their spiritual view of life. People came from all over to visit my studio, many of them familiar with my paintings from reproductions on the Santa Fe Railway calendars. Our visitors were always enchanted by the beautiful garden surrounding our house, created by my wife.
"This house was the center of our family life and a gathering place for our friends, including the other artists who lived in Taos.
"My son, Kibbey, loved his childhood home, and after my death in 1936, he kept the house as it had been during my lifetime. My grandchildren have helped to establish The Couse Foundation so that you and future generations can experience what life was like in the early days of the Taos Art Colony."
